Types of Canada Student Visa

For international learners who want to study there, Canada offers a variety of student visas. The most common student visa categories in Canada are as follows:

  • Study Permit: In order to pursue full-time studies in Canada, international students must have obtained the appropriate study permit. This is the most popular form of student visa available in Canada and applies to those who are accepted into designated learning institutions (DLIs). The permit allows students to remain in Canada for as long as their programme runs.
  • Student Direct Stream (SDS): For those from select nations, such as India, China, Vietnam, and the Philippines, there is a convenient filing system known as Student Direct Stream (SDS). In order to take advantage of this opportunity, applicants must first fulfil certain criteria, like proof of language capability and payment of the tuition fee for the initial year.
  • Off-Campus Work Permit: An off-campus employment permit may be available to international students who have been granted permission to study in Canada and who are enrolled full-time at a recognised educational institution. With this kind of authorisation, students who are enrolled in classes can work outside the classroom.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): The PGWP is available to international students who have completed a programme of study at a designated learning institution in Canada. It allows them to work in Canada for up to three years, depending on the length of their programme. The PGWP is an excellent opportunity for international graduates to gain Canadian work experience.
  • Co-op Work Permit: For some Canadian programmes, gaining practical work experience related to your field of study is a crucial part of the curriculum. In these cases, you will need to apply for a co-op work permit in order to be legally allowed to take part in an internship or co-op placement as part of your studies in Canada. With this work permit, you can combine studying with working experiences that would greatly benefit your future career choices.

Post-study Work Opportunities in Canada

International students who complete their studies at a Canadian institution have access to several post-study work opportunities that can provide them with valuable experience and knowledge. Here are a few of the most common pathways:

  • Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP): The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is a permit granted to international students who have completed their studies at a designated learning institution in Canada. Depending on how long one's programme of study was, they can receive an open work permit with a minimum duration of 8 months and a maximum length of 3 years. This type of permit means graduates are allowed to be employed by any employer within Canada without being required to have a job offer.
  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): For those seeking to stay in Canada beyond their studies, Provincial Nominee Programmes across the country offer the possibility of permanent residency. With dedicated streams and pathways for international students, these programmes provide a pathway for those who have graduated from school in Canada to make it their permanent home.
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC): International students who have gained Canadian work experience can take advantage of Canada's Experience Class programme in order to gain permanent residency. This is a special category within Express Entry, which is responsible for economic immigration into Canada. To be eligible under CEC, applicants must demonstrate their proficiency in English or French while also showcasing their Canadian work experience. Other criteria are assessed as well.
  • Employer-Sponsored Work Permits: Having completed their studies, international students may be presented with an employment offer from a company based in Canada. Should the job meet certain criteria, they can apply for a work permit through initiatives like the Temporary Foreign Worker Programme (TFWP) or the International Mobility Programme (IMP). These authorisations give graduates permission to perform duties with one particular employer in our nation.
